The name of the amethyst comes from the Greek amethystos, which means a-, “not” and methysko, “intoxicate”, a reference to the belief the ancient Romans had that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Romans were already using this semi-precious stone for hard-stone engraving (the engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art during the Roman Empire).

The amethyst is considered to be meditative and calming, to keep the head clear, thus avoiding the dreaded brain fog, to bring balance and reduce impatience. The purple amethyst is a stone that changes lives.
